defeating an ideologically-based movement may not be possible without defeating the ideology itself

The Psychological Asymmetry of Islamist Warfare

The asymmetry of battle that Israel [and America] faces requires a rethinking of strategy to deal with threats from forces whose ideologies allow them not just to frustrate many Western military advantages but to use the openness of Western societies—especially their print and image media, and the organizations through which the Western penchant for self-criticism is expressed—to their own advantage. Ideology, including the perception of right versus wrong, becomes part of the discussion. Ultimately, non-Islamists, such as Israel, need to win the ideological war as well as the military one.

Islamists aren’t the only ideologues seeking the death of Western Civilization.

The people who want to saw my head off with a dull knife and giggle while my severed esophagus squeals like a pig before they lay my head on my back,  the people who flew airliners into sky scrapers in my tribe’s main village, all the people who want to hurt my people and all the people who applaud when my people are killed and make excuses and apologies for murderers are my adversaries.

  1. The people who…applaud when my people are killed and make excuses and apologies for murderers are my adversaries.

You’re right C#4. And it’s about time that we remember that we ARE on one side or the other. There really is no gray area. It’s not just our troops who are at war, WE are at war. The enemy is the enemy of us all. Time to get int he game.

There in lies the true problem with the information fight and the government versus the military. During every major war there has been a central agency (OWI for example) that has sought to deliver a integrated message. that is just not happening in the GWOT!! Where is the unified message?

  3. Where is the unified GOV’T? Name any Democrats that gave Bush what Republicans gave FDR.

A house divided against itself can neither stand nor talk straight.

We have a painfully inarticulate Chief Executive who, in trying to change the tone in Washington failed to purge the Executive Branch of the adherents of his political opponents, we have a State Department infested with unpurged oppositional operatives, we have an absent InterAgency content to let DOD fight the Long War/GWOT/Third Great Jihad/Twelfth Crusade by themselves, and we have a Department of Defense that enjoys a reputation with the domestic audience as an island of competence in an otherwise disgusting government, in large part because they defend all of us without regard to political affiliation.

Since politics no longer stop at the water’s edge and no loyalty can be expected from the “Loyal Opposition”, political operatives of the Commander-in-Chief have to do all the strategic communicating through the oppositional cacophony.

I’m not sure I can agree with that.

defeating an ideologically-based movement IS not and NEVER HAS BEEN possible without defeating the ideology itself.

    There, now it makes sense.

Add to that the abject lesson that very few managed to learn from the WW1, WW2 cycle.

Any hostiles allowed to leave the field of battle in tact will rise again in the belief that they only had to hold out a little longer, try a little harder, the first time.

Notice the pattern as exhibited by the abject failure that was the Soviet. It is now trying to reborn itself as a hostile and seeks any connection to our current hostiles that it can stick a tentacle into. “You didn’t really beat us” is a mainstay in their new national ego rebuilding.

Once someone stands up in a hostile manner, break them. Break them absolutely and undeniably or deal with them again, and again, and again and again, until you either do break them completely or they break you.
